The speech therapist walks in the room. The joy that spreads across her face is contagious. She is special to my papa’s recovery, a gift in the flesh. Something about her stirs his motivation to fight from deep down. She tells me that as a result of my papa’s stroke he has what is called aphasia. What’s aphasia? Basically it’s a prison that holds words captive. Imagine knowing what you want to say; you’re not stupid. The words are right there on the tip of your tongue, but when you try to express these words nothing but gibberish comes outs. The frustration of having much to say with no way to communicate is devastating. People who suffer from aphasia are not without hope. Rehabilitation will play a huge role in the success of Pastor Nahum’s recovery of words and ability to express them. Today the therapist mentioned a great tool that will aide in the journey to reteach my papa to speak again. Its technology that most of us own called an iPad. There are free apps that can be downloaded onto the iPad that are specifically designed for assisting people suffering with aphasia to begin communicating more on their own. The thing is, he doesn’t have an iPad and now he really needs one. It doesn’t have to be new…maybe someone out there has one they don’t even use that could be donated for my papa’s use? This morning, the therapist at the hospital borrowed an iPad to show us how it can give my papa a sense of independence and confidence as he fights the difficult battle of aphasia.
